Warehouse Wing Chun
A private wing chun club based near Finsbury Park / Crouch Hill in north London. Our aim is to develop and maintain a high level of wing chun through intensive practice in a friendly atmosphere. The club is open for eight sessions a week.
Wing Chun training at The Warehouse is centred on the systematic study of a combat theory based on the principles of simplicity, efficiency and economy of motion.
The system can be developed as a scientific study of combat, although learning wing chun also provides many other benefits, such as learning how to improvise under pressure and how to control anger. The system is also a fun way of getting healthy and gaining in confidence.
Wing chun uses body mechanics, rather than athletic ability to generate strength, power and stability.
The style became known in the Western world largely due to Bruce Lee, who learnt the core of the system in Hong Kong before becoming a film star. Lee used the principles of wing chun as the foundation for his own style of kung fu.
Ip Man was regarded by many as the Grand Master of Wing Chun and was originally from Fatshan in China, he later moved to Hong Kong where he started teaching the style.
Wong Shun Leung , was one of Ip Man’s foremost students and highly regarded among his peers, renowned in Hong Kong as a successful fighter in “Beimo” contests. He went on to become a renowned teacher of Wing Chun in his own right, passing on much of the knowledge he had developed over the years. He was also known as the Master with Talking Hands and was undefeated.
Nino Bernardo was a Hong Kong based student of Wong Shun Leung who later moved to the UK where, during the 1980s he opened the Basement Wing Chun Club. Nino currently lives and teaches in Ibiza as well as conducting seminars and workshops across the world. In the 1970s, Nino Bernardo was one of a handful of martial art practitioners to complete the whole system with Wong Shun Leung in his school in Hong Kong.
Guy Cofie, the senior instructor at the Warehouse, completed the system under Nino at the Basement. Nino has authorised Guy, a qualified sports scientist, to teach the whole system. The Warehouse also benefits from the input of many of Nino’s other senior students from the Basement era.
The Hong Kong style of training, originally brought over and practiced by Nino Bernardo continues at the Warehouse.
